Ok, we've enjoyed having a 46" Samsung DLP TV in the living room since Jan 2005. Still has the original lamp, even....
Yesterday afternoon, the Mrs. calls saying she and our son were watching TV, when the unit suddenly made a loud "Bang" & sounded like glass beads falling inside the TV. The picture then went from color to B/W. At the same time, the one fan became a LOT louder than we ever noticed.
When I got home last night, I replaced the lamp (had a spare) - no difference, so I replaced the lamp with the original one - still a B/W picture & a very loud fan.
Called Samsung CSR this morning - they suggest that it could be either the color wheel &/or the cooling fan....
I've Googled the color wheel & see they're about $125/ea... Cooling fan? Not able to find that yet, but they suggest a tech come out first to fully diagnose the problem(s).
