I use FL, it has a steep learning curve. Its really hard to kinda help you by just writing, but you can pick up some good things from vids on You Tube.
The best thing I ever did was pick up a subscription of Computer Music Magazine. Loads of tutorials, comes with a DVD of free software, FX, vst's and tutorial files every month.

Very true, it's the same thing with "Music Tech" magazine as well.
I am a FL users. I tried reason and did not like the interface. I like the simple use of FL better. The only thing I like better about Reason over FL is that it comes with way better stock sounds. With FL you have to purchase new high quality sounds right from the gate.
I use a mac with logic pro , reason v.4 with 10gig of refills & behringer controller keyboard , I used to use cubase ,cool edit pro & ableton . Logic & reason were a bit tricky to get used to but now I like them & I got it running through a digital amp via optical lead with 6 twin driver tannoys & 12 inch active sub
I use FL Studio Producer Edition and after time you learn little tricks and which effects have a good sound. I agree that most of the stock sounds aren't top of the line compared to other progs, thats why I sample alot of snares and kicks and just add them to my fruity loops prog. I also use Cool Edit Pro to edit mixes (cut into tracks or combine tracks)
