I've been in a discussion with many of my friends lately about one single topic. Laptop DJ's... or wavies as we call them, short for microwave djs. When this topic is being discussed someone always pokes in and says the same thing... "vinyl is the only way". Now a small part of me agrees. Vinyl is a true and pure recording and as fas I'm concerned just sounds wonderful. Like the difference between a solid state amp and the warm beautiful sound of a tube amp. (I'm also a guitar player, so thats a personal side comparison). Anyway, the whole point of the discussion of wavies is that they take a major shortcut to mixing and totally throw away what a seasoned DJ has spent years learning, not what medium you use to mix (vinyl or cd, because it takes the same amount of skill) and then these wavies have the nerve to actually call themselves djs. It's a disgrace to the name. I have been a DJ for going on 12 years now and just relying on a program with a sync button does not make you a DJ. I'd love to take some wavie and hand them a couple records or cds, put them on some decks in front of a thousand people and tell them to mix perfect. OK so I guess I went on a bit of a rant there.

I agree with you it took me almost 2 years to learn good beat matching, djing is done with your ears not with a sync button I started with basic pioneer cdj 100's & a little 2 channel mixer & eventually upgraded to pioneer cmx 3000 & denon dnx 400 mixer which is good quality. I have recently purchased a vestax vci 300 running serato itch personally I think the quality & feel isnt as good as a good pair of decks although I'm kinda used to the feel of it but I have never once considered using a sync button as I feel its a lazy way to dj I always have & always will beat match using my ears plus I dont think a computer program will get it right the only thing that kinda impresses me is the looping facility & the control factor  vestax (no latency) due to the higher resolution jog wheels, but they will never replace real decks

I feel ya man,

what we do is a skill and its honed the taste we have for music is somthing aquired. These Wavies might be able to stick two songs together and beatmatch em at home on the laptop with a button . But can they do it at a party or in a pinch can they do it while they drink a soda or while they watch t.v. manually...prolly not but we have the skill! Im not worryied about wavies they can call themselves whatever they like. I use both Cd's and records because i belive in adaptibilty and versitility.

I look at it like this when we were kids we used to always play like we were somthing else like cops and robbers or space man. Its no different now let the kids play we are to busy being musical visionaries and working on our skill inovating to be bothered. A laptop is a TOOL to make tracks not to mix them.
