Chicago Cubs’ starting pitcher Matt Garza wore Matt Garza Jersey
and threw disciplined pitches as he did not give a run on six hits in
the Cubs 2-1 victory over the San Diego Padres at Wrigley Field in
Chicago on April 20. After the win, Garza wore Matt Garza Jersey
and expressed his feelings as, “As long as we get that big one, that
big W that goes on our side. Any way we can do it, I am all for it. If I
do not win a game all year, but we win my games it does not bother me
one bit.” Garza wore Matt Garza Jersey
and missed the victory moments because he pitched up to six innings but
felt content with his own part. Reed Johnson broke the tie by striking a
home run in the 11th inning to give his team a convincing win. It was
the first homer for Johnson in the current Major League Baseball season
which was struck against the Padres’ reliever Luke Gregerson. Matt wore Matt Garza Jersey and gave up three walks and struck out nine batters. When Garza wore Matt Garza Jersey
and stopped pitching after six innings, the Cubs led off with 1-0.
During the third inning, the Cubs’ posted their first run on Marlon
Byrd’s single. Kosuke Fukudome wore Kosuke Fukudome Jersey and took a single in the ninth inning off Mike Adams. The Cubs’ closer Jeff Samardzija wore Jeff Samardzija Jersey
struck out three batters in two inning pitches. After six innings,
Quade used up his three relievers on the mound. Sean Marshall gave a
walk to Orlando Hudson with two-outs and grounded out Chase Headley with
his impressive pitching. The Cubs wasted a possibility of getting extra
runs in the third inning when Aramis Ramirez wore Aramis Ramirez Jersey and got out before reaching the loaded bases. At the end of the third inning, Carlos Pena wore Carlos Pena Jersey
and grounded out. The Cub’s Manager Mike Quade was happy with the team’
effort as he said, “It happens. In the long run, just pitch good and
believe that the support will come.” The Cubs won the double-header game
against the Padres at this ground for the first time. The Padres’
starter Dustin Moseley pitched well but not enough to squeeze a win for
his team. He allowed just one run on five hits, including four
strike-outs in six inning pitches. Moseley had not a good day with bat
as he didn’t score a run. During sixth inning, the Padres lost their
momentum when Garza wore Matt Garza Jersey
and prevented the jam on Brad Hawpe’ double-play to end the inning.
Cameron Maybin made the score level by a walk and then went to third
base with combination of Will Venable. Maybin posted a run on the
sacrifice fly of Josh Barlett but completed the single in the ninth
inning off the Cub’s closer Carlos Marmol. Hundley and Headley both
flied out in the 11th inning and left the Padres with a 2-1 victory.
